They say that the man who is born to hang will never drown. This is a story about Jesse, who was not born to hang.

Back in the spring of ’56,
the snow began to melt.
Streams were rising all around
across the tobacco belt.
Old Jessie looked at the sky.
He studied the palm of his hand
He said “If that sky rolls out its thunder
it could blow apart the dam.”

Ch:
And they say the man
who is born to hang,
never need fear the water,
but, if you go courting lady luck,
you’ll never know when you’ve got her.

Jessie went to see the mayor
to tell him the fearful news.
Mayor squinted up his eyes and said
“When did they let you loose?”
So Jessie left the courthouse steps
with nobody to hear his call,
but as he reached his farmhouse door,
the rain began to fall

Ch:

The clouds came over the hills
and the dam about to burst.
Old Jessie started his tractor
saying “Things are getting’ worse.”
He headed for the village
about 16 miles an hour,
saying “Look out friends the floods a’coming.
This ain’t no summer shower.”

Ch:

Now Jesse lost his tractor
but he made it to a phone.
He made it to the valley road,
he never made it home
So many souls were swept away,
but many more they saved.
They never found old Jesse,
he never got his tombstone grave.
